Welcome to LRT U16/19's Program

Welcome! We are so excited that you’ll be joining us for the season with Loon Race Team. We have an exceptional staff of coaches and we are looking forward to a season of fun, hard work and success! All communications will be via this page and via weekly email. 

Our program is designed to help each individual athlete achieve their personal best this winter. We work within the structural framework of NHARA’s scored and U16 race calendar and design a competition schedule that is meant to help the kids ski their best when it matters most. Our goal is to send our U16’s to State Finals and Eastern Finals and Championships and our U19’s to Macomber Cup Races, The Eastern Regional USSA Finals, Eastern High School Championships and the Lafoley Spring Series.

Everything we do from the start of the winter is designed around these goals and races; with the over arching theme of providing our athletes with a developmentally appropriate training/race schedule that will continue to set the stage for their continued success in the sport. 

We look for effort over results in these events, and use them as an opportunity for the kids to become comfortable in a race environment. In late January, we have the advantage of hosting our own two day Speed Camp at Loon, which we strongly encourage athletes to attend.

Ski racing has several components; two of the biggest are technique and tactics. Technique is the “how” in skiing. Tactics are the “where” in skiing. We teach the kids “how” before they learn “where” to do it. In skiing there is no magic potion, no shortcut to success. Athletes who work hard, attend training regularly and give their best effort every day will get the most out of their season.

At this level athletes essentially have 3 different paths they can choose, requiring varying amounts of time, effort and dedication. Some opt for Training Only, and use the weekend training to augment their  High School teams competitions. Their goals are State Championships and the Eastern High School Championships  in March.   Most first year U16's will have the NHARA U16 Series as their primary goal, with the U16 State Finals as their Championship. event. They will also begin to work on their USSA National points during the season at a few open races; especially in March after Championships. Established U16s will pursue a more aggressive  race schedule, starting earlier and racing more often. Their goals are the Regional Championship events in March, held at different locations in New England each year.

Ability Class athletes are invited to participate in our full day Friday programs, in addition to the Friday Night Kanc Trainings. Our Friday Program (LRT Advantage) will be designed to enhance the existing program with lower coach to athlete ratios and the advantage of low mid-week crowds for maximum repetition. This program will be coordinated by and coached by Trevor Hamilton with additional LRT staff as needed. At this level many athletes begin to ski full-time during a winter term. We can stay competitive and be more rested in March when it matters most by simply adding two extra blocks of training on Fridays. It works and it is worth the extra time and effort required to do it. It will continue to be a game changer for those able to attend!
